Letter from the Editor: We've Come a Long Way by Sharon Williams

Congratulations! During our inaugural year, The Alliance was the leading advocate for promoting the virtual assistance industry.  We've made measurable strides, resulting in continuing local, national and international media attention, and have exciting plans for future industry exposure.

Virtual Assisting a $130 Billion Industry by 2008 by Sharon Williams

According to the "George Washington University Forecast of Emerging Technology" (January 2000) revolutionary innovation is now occurring widely in all scientific and technological fields. This phenomenon has been brought about by the IT revolution which is being used as a tool to spread and accelerate scientific and technological advances across a much wider spectrum than previously imagined. As a result over the next 20 to 30 years a broad array of new technologies will emerge in what many now call the coming "technological revolution".

The report goes on to say that "...the virtual assisting industry is growing rapidly and is expected to be a $130 billion industry by 2008, but it could be larger."

Give Away the Milk by Nadia Cornier

Perhaps you've heard the saying, "You'll never sell the cow if you keep giving the milk away for free."  Well, in relationships this may still be true, but in the business world it's considered good practice. Giving away your 'milk' or free sampling of your services, can be an excellent, and inexpensive, marketing tool for the growth of your business.

New Software Provides 'Virtual Printer Cable' for Virtual Assistants

A client in Seattle calls upon his virtual assistant, Jennifer, located in Kansas City, to prepare bound copies of a sales presentation that his colleague will need for a meeting that starts in five hours in Miami.  Not long ago, this challenge might have seemed impossible.  Although Jennifer has a computer and Internet access, she doesn't have the resources to accommodate big document production and copying jobs.  But even if she did, how could she prepare the materials and get them to Miami in five hours?

Books - The Best Marketing Tools by Nancy Cleary

Do you have a book in you? I bet you do. I bet you could take your experiences and how you developed your expertise and organize a collection of stories, examples, and insights which could educate, entertain and inspire. What about your clients - do they have books they want to publish? How would you like to be your client's solution to seeing their book in print?

Success Tips for Small Business Owners by Lorraine Pirihi

Running a small business requires many skills. However to do this successfully you need to organize yourself first. Avoid procrastination, read the following and take action.

Got Questions? We've Got Answers by Sharon Williams

Often times, virtual assistants ask questions on list servs that go to the heart of business planning and marketing strategies. Many virtual assistants willingly respond as well as offer encouragement to the questioner. Some questions, however, go to the foundation of sound business development and decisions that should be made after thorough research, thoughtful contemplation and evaluation.

Marketing Magic by Dee Ennen

Virtual Assisting has become one of the most exciting and rewarding home-based businesses.  What a privilege it is to be a part of such an evolutionary Industry that continually grows and offers new opportunities and rewards for those coming into the business and those veteran PROS as well!

Looking for A Niche? Try Real Estate by Penny Sullivan

If you are a VA looking for a niche, take a look at the real estate industry.  High productivity Realtors® reach a point where they cannot sell any more property without hiring an assistant to handle all the details necessary to reach a successful closing of the transactions. There are many tasks that must be accomplished and they must be tracked to ensure that the person responsible completes them in a timely manner. This is where a good VA can come in.

Getting the Most Bang from a Networking Event by Sharon Williams

Ever thought about hosting your own networking event and promoting your business at the same time? Ah ha, what a wonderful idea - you could invite non-competing business associates, other entrepreneurs, etc., and tell them to bring a friend.

I'm an introvert. Is it really that simple? It could be, but if you are too bashful to take the lead, ask an outgoing, non-competing business acquaintance to joint sponsor the event. Share the work and share the reward.

8 Ways a Book Can Boost Your Marketing Plan and Build Your Brand by Nancy Cleary

Now that you have a book which can be ordered in any quantity with ease, and is being distributed through all major channels, you are ready to use that book to propel your marketing. While many authors work their hardest to market their books, your book can work hard to market you, your business, service, and/or other products.

Marketing Your Press Release to the Media by Carolyn Moncel

Where should I look to find story ideas for my press releases? It's a question that a local web designer asked me recently during a client meeting. My advice to him would apply to any small-business owner. Start by looking at yourself and your company because like everything else in life, the best ideas are often found right under your nose. The same can be said for story ideas for press releases.

Tech Tools and Tips by Kathie M. Thomas

We hear and read of new buzzwords and phrases constantly every day.  Virtual Reality, VA (Virtual Assistants), VBO (Virtual Business Operator), Viral Marketing (what is there about ‘V’?), B2B (Business to Business), Database Marketing, eBusiness, eCommerce, eZine, eMarketing, HBB (Home based business), SOHO (Small Office Home Office), WAHM (Work at Home Mom), DSL (Digital Subscriber Line), and others are being coined for our every day business use.

History of Technology: Blogging, the New Rage by David Herron

The first thing to know is, what the heck are blogs? There are several essential features to blogging that make it a powerful tool, and if you skip any of them the power is diminished.

The word "blog" is short for "weblog", which probably doesn't tell you much. A "weblog" is, in turn, a sequential series of writings. Originally a "weblog" was meant to be a place that someone could quickly write notes, and the notes would be recorded chronologically. In other words, blogging is essentially a "diary". But if that's all you see a blog as being, then it's easy to dismiss them and miss the power.
