March 2004When Working Out Isn't Working For You
by Heather MorenoGet Motivated: Part 2In Get Motivated: Part 1--I talked about how good exercise makes us feel (I mean, did you ever say after a workout, "gosh, I wish I hadn't done that"?). I also shared some of the health and financial benefits as well as the main reason I think that everyone is not exercising: motivation, or lack of it. This month I will cover the second of the four points to getting and staying motivated The Accounting Factor: In our technology driven world, exercise support doesn't necessarily mean you have to hire a personal trainer. For the past five years, options such as telephone coaching and Internet support have gained popularity nationwide. Surprisingly, 20 years of research on telephone-based fitness coaching at Stanford University shows adherence rates of 75-90% for people who have been held accountable for their workouts and daily activity through telephone coaching. " exercise support doesn't necessarily mean you have to hire a personal trainer." Remember when the word "coaching" made you think of professional sports? Now, business professionals utilize coaching services to increase productivity and financial rewards in their work environment, to balance their business and personal lives, and to get physically fit.
Most people need far more support and accountability than they realize to become regular exercisers. If working out isn't working for you, let go of the need that you have to do it on your own. Find the right kind of support to fit your needs, goals and personality that will drive you to success. Invest in yourself - you're worth it! Join me in the next issue for motivation tip #3.
