The Virtual Commute

by Laura Armbruster

Misconceptions and enlightenment about working from home!

Recently I've noticed an increased understanding of what a virtual assistant is. This is excellent news, particularly since we are part of a rapidly growing segment of work-at-home independent contractors. However, I've also fielded a swell of questions like "Well, aren't you part of a franchise?" "Don't you all work for the same company?" "I met a virtual assistant the other day. Do you work together?" Hmmmm…..

While there is nothing wrong with franchises, I find it interesting that so many people feel that if you are a virtual assistant, it must be part of a major corporation. Perhaps it is the term virtual assistant, or perhaps our concept is new to them. Whatever the case, I make sure to take that opportunity to dispel the myth. Here are some statements you can use to help you in the same circumstance:

  • As a virtual assistant, I am an independent contractor providing services to (you can fill in the blank).
  • While I understand that you have probably met several people in the VA field, typically we are business owners ourselves.
  • I am pleased that you have met other VA's and are aware of the many services we provide! While we do collaborate and have a very supportive industry, we are independent contractors.

Some virtual assistant's don't use the term because it does create some confusion. I'm up to the challenge, however, and will take whatever time necessary to spread the word. I know that through our continued efforts, we will dispel myths and increase knowledge about being a virtual assistant and all the great services we provide!

I would love to know how you dispel the myths and answer questions you receive. Let me hear from you by e-mailing questions@thevirtualalliance.com. Until then, keep on virtually commuting!
